Knowing a River: An Ethnoecology of a Watershed

This should probably be the Centre's flagship research project.

Pick one watershed rather than trying to tackle the whole country.

Given your location, you could start with something in the West Midlands and make the project deliberately local.

The central question:

What does a watershed know about the relationship between people and landscape?

You investigate the watershed from source to outlet.

But instead of simply conducting ecological surveys, you follow human and ecological relationships along the water.

You might document:

rivers and streams
springs
wetlands
farms
towns
industry
canals
reservoirs
woodland
floodplains
historical settlements
fishing
farming
water management
pollution
recreation
local stories
place names

And interview people who know different parts of it.

A farmer knows one section.

An angler knows another.

A conservationist knows another.

An industrial historian knows another.

A child who plays beside the river knows something else.

The resulting project becomes a polyphonic portrait of a watershed.
