Knowledge That Lives

I'd make this much more ambitious than simply “research into Traditional Ecological Knowledge”.

The question would be:

What happens to ecological knowledge when it is separated from the practices that sustain it?

This allows you to explore TEK as something embodied and relational, rather than simply a database of facts.

For example, investigate knowledge associated with:

• tracking

• fire

• plants

• fibres

• trees

• food

• hunting

• fishing

• weather

• seasonal indicators

• navigation

• natural pigments

• medicine

• craft

But always follow the knowledge into practice.

Someone doesn't merely know that a particular tree has particular properties.

They know:

where it grows,

when to harvest it,

which part to use,

how to process it,

what tools are required,

what shouldn't be taken,

and perhaps what cultural obligations surround it.

That is a much richer conception of ecological knowledge.

There is also an important ethical dimension

The Centre should explicitly ask:

• Who owns knowledge?

• Who has authority to transmit it?

• What knowledge should not be shared?

• What happens when researchers extract knowledge?

• How can research become reciprocal?

• What distinguishes learning from appropriation?

That would prevent the project becoming another romanticised “ancient wisdom” exercise.

Output

I'd produce:

a series of filmed conversations + essays + case studies + a methodological paper.

Eventually it could become a substantial publication.
