Creating the….

Researching the dynamic relationships between people and their natural environments towards sustainable futures.

Ethnoecology is at the unique intersection of anthropology, craft, sustainability, ethnography, human ecology, archaeology, and ecology.

How language, culture, and media influence how the natural world is framed and formed are just some areas that require careful investigation to genuinely appreciate the various aesthetic, implicit, and ontological relationships communities have in their natural environment.

The interrelationships between biodiversity, climate warming, and environmental and social justice are crucial to include in this research area. With the idea of “nature connection” increasingly homogenising and reducing the complexity of the real world into a theoretical model, embracing the variety of lived experiences as a precursor to research is necessary.

Aims of the Centre;

  • Bring researchers and practitioners together across various fields to explore the dynamic relationships between people and their natural environments towards sustainable futures.

  • Advise policymakers on the importance of ethnoecological perspectives relating to behaviour change and sustainability.

  • Create a database of ethnoecological research, practice and practitioners.

  • Provide training and consultancy in ethnoecology.
