In More-than-Human Neighbourhoods, we explore what happens to our sense of place when we begin to know the other beings who live there.

We share our everyday landscapes with countless other beings, from foxes and badgers to birds, insects, trees and fungi, yet often experience them simply as “nature” rather than as participants in a shared world. More-than-Human Neighbours explores whether sustained attention to these lives can deepen our understanding of, and relationship with, the places we inhabit.

Using tracking, observation and simple ethnographic methods, participants learn to follow signs, movements and interactions, asking not only what species is this? but what relationships does it reveal? Through repeated encounters, field notes and place-based observation, we explore how other beings shape landscapes—and how noticing them might change our own sense of belonging, responsibility and connection.

The project asks whether knowing our more-than-human neighbours can help us experience place not as a backdrop, but as a shared community of life.
